Meet the Creators

After completing an intensive Mandarin course at the National University of Singapore in 2002, Martha was inspired to create the Max and Mei Chinese Zodiac Series. The stories are based on the real-life experiences of her eldest son and his Chinese best friend, and have captured the interest and imagination of children around the world ever since. Martha is also the author of the factual Zhonguo Mingren series and the action-packed Pangu Chinese comic book series.  At the moment she is busy working on COPE, the educational non for profit series which helps kids get ready for natural disasters. Martha lives in Hong Kong with her husband, four children and two naughty dogs!

Mariko’s name translates literally as ‘ten thousand mile child’ as it was thought that she would always be far from her birthplace, caught in the space between different cultures. She was born in Japan, she spent her childhood in Hong Kong, and was educated in the UK. Mariko studied at Central St. Martins in London, where she was later an Associate Lecturer for several years. As a freelancer, she spends as much time in the print studio as she can. She has attended various international artists’ residencies, and regularly exhibit her art around the world. Travel is a passion of Mariko, she happily works from wherever she is at the time, and now lives between Tokyo, California, and London, depending largely on the weather.
